As I enter the final stages of this sarsaparilla showdown, I wonder if I've managed to leave myself with some final contenders that will make all of the previous entrants look like weak sugar water. It is possible.
After today I still have an imported variety and two bottled varieties to go. And they are the three that at the beginning of this personal experiment I considered to be the potential winners. Would my instincts have been right? It's hard to tell. There have been some pleasant surprises along the way. But it's not over yet. For starters we have today's contender.
Today we close the book on what I've named the Regular range.
Riverport Double Sarsaparilla is indeed the final contestant from my Regular category. Sadly it's probably helped prove the point that the regular range is just that. Regular.
I've not mentioned it until now, but I happen to believe you can tell a lot about a product based on the website is has to offer. So far this contender's website is the worst I've come across. That doesn't mean this is the worst sarsaparilla I've had, but it sure sure isn't the best. This is sadly one of those drinks that you ask yourself at the end "Am I sure that was sarsaparilla?"
I believe it's becoming obvious to me that the best sarsaparillas are those that contain real traces of the sarsaparilla root. Not flavouring that is attempting to make you believe you're drinking sarsaparilla. It seems kind of logical really.
My bottle of Riverport was also the lightest drink in my fridge. By lightest I don't mean it weighed the least. I mean it was the only sarsaparilla that I could see light through. It was sad really. I wondered at first if I'd actually already drunk this bottle and then refilled it with my own weak sarsaparilla cordial. Of course I realised that this drink was lighter than the cordial I make myself and that the sealed lid and carbonation meant I was yet to drink this one.
It seems the final two contenders from the Regular range are really going to let the others down. Oh well. Either way they're both still better than any Australian Root Beer*.
* Americans beware ... Australian Root Beer is not what you know root beer to be.
